World press freedom day: Imo NUJ, Commissioner of Police hail journalists.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Imo State Council Felicitates with all journalists and media practitioners in Imo State on the `2013 World Press Freedom Day.

Mr. Innocent Igwe the Chairman of Imo NUJ commended all media stakeholders and benefactors especially the Government and other institutionalized custodians of the media sector for their support and strong belief in the press as the fourth estate of the realm for which press freedom is internationally accepted.

The Chairman stressed that Journalists also be reminded that the powerful instrument of journalism should not be used for blackmail, intimidation, extortion, harassment and manipulation with the need to always separate facts from opinions remains paramount for press freedom to flourish meaningfully.

He said NUJ and journalism in Imo State under the present dispensation was open and receptive to all, irrespective of political, religious and ideological persuasions and absolutely mandated by the Nigeria Constitution to serve all categories of public interest, the government, political parties, public office holders and the common man, in line with the social responsibilities of the press.

The Chairman promised that the current leadership of NUJ in Imo State will never be identified with any issue of parochial interest, but remain focused in its determination to ensure that the highest possible standards of journalism practice was attained so as to give Imo State and Nigeria the best they deserve

He said that the ongoing “in house cleansing” was to ensure sound professional conduct among members and earn due respect and recognition for the union.

Mr. Igwe emphasized that we joined our colleagues globally to press for the World Press Freedom Day; journalist in Imo State are charged to use their freedom responsible for the well being of the society.

The Commissioner of Police, Imo State, Mohammed Musa Katsina represented by the police public relations officer commended journalists and the entire media houses in the state as they celebrate this year’s World Press Freedom Day.

He urged the journalists to keep the pen flowing in the right direction and “together the police and the media would fight crime and made the state as peaceful as possible for all Imolites.”
