Information Technology
The Information Technology Department is an arm of the Ministry of Information and Communications.
It was initially created as a Unit in year 2000 but later transformed into a full fledged Department in year 2006 during the reform process of the last administration.

The Department operates from the 4th floor of the Radio House building, the Data Centre on the 14th floor where all VSAT indoor Unit, Servers and the MDF switches and Routers are controlled, the E-Learning Centre located on the 4th floor, the Infocyber located at the National Press Centre, WLAN within Radio House network and the Zonal Information Resource Centres (ZIRC).
To maintain a fully automated Information Ministry kept in sync with the latest development in information technology and strategically positioned as the National Information HUB.
- Integrates IT into every facet of Information Gathering and Dissemination in Nigeria.
- Develops and increases IT capacity among all staff.
- Computerizes and automates all management processes in the Ministry e.g. Intranet (e-Messaging, collaboration and monitoring), HR Systems, Document Management etc.
The Department is made up of three divisions i.e. Web –Based Application Division, Software Management Division and Hardware/Network Administration Division.
The Department is saddled with the following responsibilities:

- Provisioning and management of Internet facilities, the Local Area Network (LAN) and Wireless network in the ministry
- Effective implementation of all Procurement of Computer Hardware, Software and other IT related accessories in the Ministry
- Monitoring of all Comprehensive and Preventive Maintenance of Information Technology facilities in the ministry
- Management and maintenance of the Ministry’s website and the National portal www.nigeria.gov.ng
- Capacity building for staff of the Ministry on Information Technology
- Source fresh information and upgrade on IT infrastructure / solution in the Ministry
- Representing the Ministry in major International Organisations such as the World Summit on Information Society (WSIS), Commonwealth Telecommunication Organisation (CTO), Africa ICT Forum, Committee On Development Information – (CODI) and COMARCI
- Liaising with relevant governmental Organisatioins and NGO’s on Information Technology
Strategic Development
Develops and maintains IT strategies and framework that reflect current and future business needs and recognized best practices.
Web Management
Supervises the development and management of the National Web Portal, ensuring that the content is well presented, up-to-date and meets demand from government, general public and international community.
Project Services
Provides, as needed, the necessary elements of work for the successful implementation of all IT projects in the Ministry. This is done to ensure that work done is according to specification and standard.
The Department also makes appropriate recommendation and management of IT project in the Ministry.
Capacity Building
Trains staff formally and on the job, in various functions to apply IT tools for effective service delivery.
Application Support
Supports the software in use within the Ministry, including helping users to understand and resolve errors and providing platform for the implementation of the IPPIS solution.
Network Management
Manages and optimizes the performance of the Local Area Network and Intranet within the Ministry.
Hardware Maintenance Support
Effective monitoring of contractors handling Annual comprehensive maintenance of Computer system, Printers, Scanners and other System accessories in the Ministry and the Zonal Information Resources Centres in the country.
Service Desk Management
Provide support services to end Users so that faults, enquiries and request for IT developments are managed swiftly and accurately.
